Factory Leather vs Aftermarket Leather

Marc Fisher • March 11, 2020

Lets compare prices and features for cars with factory leather and base model cars

I get asked this question frequently " Why would someone add leather to a car instead of just buying a car with factory leather?" That's a $11,923 question. Let's use a 2020 Toyota Camry, the best selling car in 2019. Their  top of the  line is the Camry XSE. I looked at one fully loaded with a window sticker price of $36,912. The base model is the Camry LE with a sticker price of $23,690. Thats a $13,222 difference. If we add leather to the Base model for $1,299 then we have a $11,923 difference. The thing is, the base model Camry is loaded up with a vast array of goodies. They have power windows and, mirrors,Front Bucket Seats -inc: 8-way power-adjustable driver seat w/power lumbar support and 6-way adjustable front passenger seat

The XSE has a few more options that I can certainly live with out, like
The answer to the question : Why would someone add leather to a car instead of just buying a car with factory leather is this: You can buy a base model Camry, add leather to it and save $11,923.
Another reason a dealer will add leather to a vehicle is this: They have a buyer ready to buy. The buyer finds the color combination but it has cloth seats, but he/she want's leather. The dealer can either order one from Toyota, do a dealer trade, or bring it to us for a leather seat conversion by Katzkin or Roadwire. If they order from Toyota it will take weeks. If they do a dealer trade it may take a few days, and they will have to give the trading dealer anything on their lot. Dealer # 2 will pick something that is hard to get. Like when the highly anticipated Chrysler PT Cruise came out and the couldn't get enough of them. Dealer #2 would pick the hard to get vehicle. Plus put milage on your brand new car. Letting us just do a leather conversion is much simpler for everyone involved, not to mention our leather has a 3 year-36,000 mile warranty. If the seat wears out from entering and exiting the vehicle it is warranted. Most OEM warranties cover wear on upholstery 12 months. So converting cloth to leather in a new vehicle makes perfect sense...........
